The 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded for inventions in laser physics with one half to Arthur Ashkin and the other half to Gérard Mourou and Donna Strickland. Ashkin was awarded "for the optical tweezers and their application to biological systems" while Mourou and Strickland were given the honour "for their method of generating high-intensity, ultra-short optical pulses".
